EXPERIMENT NO. 18:

FARADAY’S ELECTRIC GENERATOR

Figure 24

Materials:

A large copper disk turned by means of a crank

Large horseshoe magnet

Meter and suitable connections

Do not try this experiment unless you can obtain help from your school lab. The apparatus is not easy to make. However, even without it, you can understand the experiment that Faraday performed.

Two wires are attached to a big copper disk: one by means of a “brush,” a wire that lightly touches the edge of the disk, the other connection is made to the shaft or axis. Both ore connected by means of wires to a meter.

A crank spins the disk so it revolves between the north and south poles of a large horseshoe magnet. As it revolves, a steady current is produced. This is a direct current—it goes in only one direction. But when the crank is turned in the opposite direction, the current also reverses direction, as the meter indicates.
